Meta has signed an agreement to hold a nuclear power plant in Illinois operational for the next 20 years to serve the energy needs of artificial intelligence and data centers. This agreement allows Meta to purchase 1.1 gigawatts of electricity from the supplier Constellation, starting in 2027. The company emphasizes the value of nuclear energy in providing stable electricity for AI development.

The energy demand for AI technology is on the rise, with forecasts indicating that the demand from AI data centers will double by 2030. This agreement will also preserve over 1,100 jobs and contribute $13.5 million annually to tax revenue without requiring additional support from consumers. Many Illinois lawmakers have welcomed this agreement as a forward-looking investment for the local economy.
