Biden intends to provide Ukraine with JASSM missiles that can carry a 1,000-pound warhead and have a range of over 300 kilometers.
On August 16, Jinshi Data reported that the Biden administration is "open" to providing Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles, which would enhance the combat capability of Kyiv's F-16 fighters in battles against Russia. As the White House is willing to provide Ukraine with Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM), Ukraine has unexpectedly succeeded in ground raids within Russia. A U.S. government official stated that no final decision has been made regarding the provision of missiles, but the government is working through complex details. These issues include reviewing the transfer of sensitive technology and ensuring that Ukraine's aircraft can launch these missiles, which weigh 2,400 pounds (approximately 1.09 tons) and carry a 1,000-pound (approximately 0.5 tons) warhead. When launched from a U.S.-made fourth-generation fighter jet, these cruise missiles can have a range of over 200 miles (approximately 321.9 kilometers). U.S. officials said there is still much work to be done before the missiles actually arrive in Ukraine, including ensuring that Kyiv's existing Soviet-era aircraft and newly delivered F-16s can launch missiles at targets more than 230 miles away.
