Biden: Meta's termination of fact-checking is "very shameful"
According to the report of Golden Finance on January 11th, US President Biden criticized Meta, the metaverse platform company, for terminating fact-checking on social media platform Facebook and photo wall, calling it "very shameful". Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced on the 7th that the company will abandon third-party fact-checking in the United States and instead hand over the task of exposing false information to ordinary users. This model, known as "community annotations", was promoted by social platform X. This decision is widely regarded as an attempt to appease the incoming President Trump. For a long time, his conservative supporters have complained that fact-checking on social media platforms is a means of restricting freedom of speech and censoring right-wing content. When asked about this decision at the White House, Biden told reporters, "I think this is very shameful." He said, "It is important to tell the truth." He also said that this move is "completely contrary to everything that the United States represents". On the 10th, Brazil requested that Meta provide an explanation within 72 hours, including its fact-checking policy in the country and how it plans to protect "basic rights" on its platform.
