Recently, the tech world has once again focused on TSL and SpaceX founder Elon Musk. Musk announced a bold plan on social platform X (formerly Twitter), sparking widespread discussion and criticism.
Musk stated that he is dissatisfied with the 'garbage' and 'errors' produced by his AI model Grok. To address this issue, he proposed a radical solution: to have Grok version 3.5 rewrite the entire human knowledge base and then retrain Grok with this new data.
Musk explained: 'We will leverage the advanced reasoning capabilities of Grok 3.5 to rewrite the human knowledge base. This process will involve filling in information gaps and removing erroneous content. After that, we will use this optimized data to retrain the model.' He believes that all AI models currently on the market rely excessively on unverified training data, resulting in the generation of a large amount of useless information.
However, Musk's idea was immediately met with strong opposition from the academic community. Gary Marcus, an honorary professor at New York University, commented: 'This is just like a plot from the novel "1984". You can't get Grok to align with your personal views, so you just rewrite all of history to fit your ideas.'
Professor Bernardino from the University of Milan in Italy also expressed his concerns on LinkedIn: 'Modifying AI training data for ideological purposes is wrong from every angle!'
This controversy highlights a core issue in the development of AI: how to ensure data quality while avoiding human bias and manipulation. While Musk's plan aims to improve the accuracy of AI outputs, it has also raised concerns about potential information manipulation.
As AI technology continues to advance, balancing technological innovation with ethical considerations will become a persistent challenge faced by the industry. Musk's actions will undoubtedly spark more in-depth discussions about the direction of AI development and data governance.
