Reflecting on Ethereum Governance: Deep Insights from the EIP-3074 Incident

Recently, the discussions within the Ethereum community surrounding EIP-3074 have sparked deep reflections on its governance mechanism. This event not only exposed some issues in the current governance process but also provided us with an opportunity for improvement.

EIP-3074 aims to bring the convenience of account abstraction to regular Ethereum account users. However, after obtaining the approval of core developers, the ERC-4337 community expressed strong opposition. Ultimately, Vitalik proposed EIP-7702 as an alternative solution to resolve this dispute.

This process has left many people dissatisfied. The main reasons include: the lengthy approval time of EIP-3074; the core developers' failure to timely listen to the opinions of the ERC-4337 community; and ultimately having to retract previously approved proposals.

The root of the problem lies in people's misunderstanding of the role of the Ethereum core developer meeting (ACD). In fact, there is also an informal governance force known as the "roadmap" that often has the ability to override the decisions of ACD.

The roadmap represents the long-term development direction of Ethereum, such as the scaling roadmap and account abstraction roadmap. Core developers will follow these roadmaps when making decisions, but due to the lack of formal approval processes, the recognition of different roadmaps may vary.

In this framework, Vitalik plays a role similar to that of a company CTO. Although he does not participate in every specific decision, he has a significant impact on the roadmap of key areas. This influence stems from his grasp of the Ethereum vision.

To improve governance, we can:

  1. Increase the transparency of EIP and promptly inform the community of important progress.

  2. Strengthen community participation by setting discussion periods for community members during the ACD meetings.

  3. Promote understanding and communication between core developers and researchers.

We can use the VVRC model to understand Ethereum governance: community values ( Values ) → Vitalik's vision ( Vision ) → research team's roadmap ( Roadmaps ) → core developers' implementation ( Clients ).

The EIP-3074 incident exposed the shortcomings in current governance but also provided us with an opportunity for improvement. By refining the governance mechanism, we can better promote the continuous development of Ethereum.
