UTXO: A New Opportunity in the Bitcoin Ecosystem
The UTXO model of Bitcoin, while lacking the smart contract capabilities of Ethereum, may foster entirely new ecological patterns due to its uniqueness. Recent applications like inscriptions and runes driven by the Ordinals protocol provide new possibilities for building applications based on UTXO. This UTXO-based application model shares security with the main chain and is expected to form an ecosystem different from Ethereum L2.
The UTXO mechanism makes every satoshi of Bitcoin "non-fungible", laying the groundwork for the development of the Ordinals protocol and the BRC-20 ecosystem. The Ordinals protocol allows for the inscribing of any information on the Bitcoin blockchain, while BRC-20 realizes the issuance of fungible tokens based on this. These innovations further explore the potential of UTXO, driving the development of the Bitcoin ecosystem.
In addition to inscriptions and runes, Nervos CKB has upgraded the UTXO model, creating the Cell Model.
