On-chain maximalism: Building a more authentic Web3 world
The Interweaving of Virtual and Reality: A New Chapter in the On-Chain World
Reality is often regarded as the embodiment of truth, representing an indisputable order. This order provides a sense of reassurance, leading us to believe that even as time passes and life comes to an end, reality remains eternal. In contrast, the virtual is often seen as synonymous with falsehood, implying a logical contradiction. Things built on this contradictory foundation, although superficially glamorous, are difficult to sustain for long and ultimately cannot escape the fate of destruction.
However, the boundary between reality and the virtual often becomes blurred. We are accustomed to viewing the surrounding things from an empirical perspective: what is familiar and comfortable is considered real, while what is unfamiliar and distant is seen as illusory. This judgment varies from person to person. From a logical standpoint, how can we determine that the world we inhabit is not a carefully woven dream? How can we verify that those things we consider real are not merely illusions produced by the brain receiving electrical signals? We have immersed ourselves in familiar environments for so long that we often forget to question deeply.
The attention-grabbing reality is the reality that is meaningful to them, and this meaningful reality leads to a transformation in self-awareness. When you immerse yourself in electronic devices, entering your favorite games and guiding characters through vibrant adventure worlds, you become so focused that you forget the passage of time. In this flow state, the characters in the game become meaningful embodiments of yourself, and the game world becomes a reality of significant importance to you. Your body seems to turn into a mere vessel, detached from that reality, merely maintaining the conditions necessary for your mental activities.
The phenomenon of subjective displacement allows us to construct new realities. We advocate for "on-chain reality maximalism" because we believe that the inherent decentralization and immutability of blockchain technology provide a solid foundation for building these new realities. The large-scale decentralized applications we are developing serve as vast containers capable of supporting a growing number of participants. The world defined by smart contracts is not just a carefully curated theme park for temporary entertainment; it can transcend mere amusement to create an environment where people must take responsibility for their actions and bear their consequences. From this perspective, many people do not take the large-scale decentralized applications we are building as seriously as they should. Many view the on-chain world as a simple supplement to the existing world, something optional or secondary. This casual attitude undermines the intrinsic credibility of these applications, making it difficult for future residents of the on-chain world to be persuaded to engage in constructive activities that can bring long-term, stable value.
Developing large-scale applications is a key step towards achieving "on-chain reality". Gaming is an important subset of large-scale applications, and there are many voices around us that resist the concept of gaming. This resistance reflects a latent anxiety that is not entirely unfounded. The "sub-reality" shaped by traditional online games shows significant appeal. However, at the same time, this "sub-reality" is strongly controlled by centralized entities, and the foundation it is built upon is unreliable and could collapse at any moment. However, for fully on-chain games, there is no predetermined doom in their fate. Based on this, we can attempt to construct a reality that is more real and imaginative than the physical world we inhabit: a reality that is wilder, more romantic, and more beautiful.
Our bodies exist on Earth, requiring daily survival, maintaining health, social interaction to fend off loneliness, and selling labor to earn money. These necessities consume a large amount of our time and energy. We may try to imbue these tasks with positive meaning for self-comfort, but this is often just a reluctant compromise. We are born into this chaotic life stage, seemingly making choices, yet in reality, we are merely selecting from a series of unsatisfactory options, guided by luck and intuition, oblivious to the consequences. With advancements in science and technology, material resources have become more abundant, human lifespan has increased, and artificial intelligence has taken over more fundamental tasks. "On-chain reality maximalism" provides a pathway to address the spiritual crisis faced by humanity.
"On-chain realism maximalism" is not just a new trend in crypto culture, but an evolution of civilization itself. In this new reality, everyone can become their own master, breaking free from imposed, meaningless choices and building a future that belongs to themselves and all humanity. Here, there is no centralized control, no irreversible collapse, only a world that evolves continuously through consensus and action. In the world of on-chain realism, we are no longer passive recipients of external commands, but active creators of a future that is freer, more romantic, and full of hope. This future may be more real than we ever thought "reality" to be.
